Central Nova On-line Web Hosting Services:

CNO Dial-Up Accounts include 5 MB (Home Internet/Home Internet Unlimited) or 10 MB (Small Business Unlimited) of webspace.

Your web site address is based on your assigned 'username'.

For Example:

If your username is 'newuser@cnova.net' then the URL to your webspace will be: http://home.cnova.net/~newuser/

Accessing Your FTP Account:

To publish files to your website you will need FTP client software like WS_FTP (For PC Users - www.ipswitch.com) or FETCH (For MAC Users - fetchsoftworks.com) to connect to your account. There are many different FTP clients available - you will have to find the one that works best for you.

To connect to your account via FTP - use the following
information to create an FTP Profile:

Profile Name:
My CNO Website
FTP Host:
home.cnova.net
Host Type:
Automatic Detect or UNIX Standard
Username:
Your E-mail Address
Password:
Your E-mail Address Password

To create a website you will need a generic text editor (like Notepad or Simpletext) or an HTML editor and a knowledge of HTML to create your pages.

There many different HTML editors available and you will have to find the one that works best for you.

Important:

The filename for your main index page or 'homepage' should be 'index.html' or 'index.htm'.

This way visitors can access your website via http://home.cnova.net/~newuser/ and not have to specify a 'filename' at the end of the URL. ie: http://home.cnova.net/~newuser/yourfile.html

If your homepage is not named properly - users will see a directory listing all the files in your webspace when they try to access your website via http://home.cnova.net/~newuser/.

If you have any other questions or support issues email us at support@cnova.net.

General Tips:

As a general rule - generic text and HTML files are uploaded/downloaded in 'ASCII Mode' when using FTP software and images and files like PDF, Word or Excel files are uploaded in 'BINARY Mode'. When uploading files to your site using FTP, its best to keep your file names all 'lowercase' - and with no spaces in the filename.

For Example:

Use: 'yourfile.jpg' NOT 'YourFile.JPG'

Use: 'mywebpage.htm' NOT 'my web page.htm'

You can also organize different types of content or files like images on your website by creating sub-directories ie: http://home.cnova.net/~newuser/images/

Finding Software:

There are many websites where you can search for and download freeware and shareware software - here are two:

- Tucows.com

- Download.com

We recommend you always be careful when you are downloading software of any kind and have updated anti-virus software enabled on your system. CNO cannot be held responsible for anything you download from any of these sites if it causes problems on your system.

Learning HTML:

If you are using an HTML Editor - it probably includes a Help File or Templates you can use to get started - and there are many websites offering free help and tutorials - here are a few:

- W3.ORG - HyperText Markup Language (HTML)

- HTML Code Tutorial

- W3Schools Tutorials

Note: FrontPage extensions are not currently supported on CNOVA.
